The clinical biochemistry department has one of the widest diagnostic repertoires of the pathology services.
Analysis of constituent compounds in blood, urine, faeces, cerebro spinal fluid, sweat and other such media aid the clinicians in the screening, diagnosis, prognosis and monitoring of many conditions.
Provision for clinical biochemistry services is available at both Stoke Mandeville and High Wycombe hospitals.
The clinical biochemistry department at Stoke Mandeville is located within the old part of the hospital site and is accessed by entrance 2.
The clinical biochemistry department at High Wycombe is located in the main (Phase 1) hospital building with access via the main entrance.
The departments employ a number of clinical, technical and non-technical staff thereby providing a full range of support for our users. Clinical support is provided by the consultant chemical pathologists who are happy to answer any questions with regards to interpretation of results, patient management and other such queries.
Technical and managerial support is provided by the head biomedical scientists and senior biomedical scientists.
Analytical work is performed by a number of biomedical scientists (BMS) and some senior biomedical scientists with administrative and technical support from medical laboratory assistants (MLA).
The departments are recognised training laboratories with an active training programme designed to produce the next generation of multidisciplinary biomedical scientists. Individuals within the programme attend a part time, day release, degree programme or are completing the required in service training for registration with the health professions council.
High Wycombe also has a phlebotomy department located alongside the clinical biochemistry department.
