Coloproctology deals with the investigation, diagnosis and treatment of all aspects of colorectal conditions. These include problems you might have with your colon, bowel, rectum and appendix.
Our service is provided by four specialist colorectal surgeons, five colorectal nurses and stoma nurses. We have specific expertise in the management of colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), diverticular disease, colorectal polyps, functional bowel disorder (constipation, incontinence, obstructed defaecation), and anorectal conditions including haemorrhoids (piles), anal fissures, anal fistulas and rectal prolapses.
All cases of colorectal cancer are discussed weekly with other specialist radiologists, gastroenterologists, histopathologists, oncologists and palliative care doctors to determine the best care for each patient.
We also provide investigations for bowel symptoms including colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy. Some patients are offered outpatient treatments for haemorrhoids.
In addition to this, we have a particular interest in performing laparoscopic colorectal surgery and, combined with an enhanced-recovery programme, patients experience less pain following surgery with a short hospital stay.
Outpatient colorectal consultations are provided at:-
1) Wycombe Hospital
2) Stoke Mandeville Hospital
3) Amersham Hospital
All routine and urgent referrals from GPs should be sent to the out-patient department of that hospital.
Emergency referrals should be made to the on-call surgical team at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.
