We provide a specialist endocrinology service for patients with hormonal and metabolic problems. You may also be interested in our diabetes section.
The main organs that secrete hormones are the pituitary, thyroid, parathyroids, adrenals, pancreas, ovaries and testes, but other organs can be involved where abnormal production occurs. Symptoms can arise from either a hormonal excess or deficiency.
Most conditions are managed in hospital. We work closely with our surgical colleagues when patients require thyroid and parathyroid surgery. Where appropriate, you may be offered minimally invasive surgery for parathyroid adenomas. We are part of the Oxford Cancer Network for thyroid cancer and provide a comprehensive thyroid nodule service.
Our close links with Oxford also include pituitary surgery. We are able to make the initial diagnosis and provide post-operative follow-up locally.
Gynaecological endocrinology clinics are held at Amersham, Stoke Mandeville and Wycombe hospitals and specialise in female reproductive disorders, particularly polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and hirsutism. We have strong links with our fertility expert colleagues.
The osteoporosis service is run in conjunction with our colleagues in rheumatology.
