Our team aims to prevent the spread of infections within our hospitals. We're both proactive and reactive.
Proactive elements include formulation of policies and guidelines, staff training, audit, surveillance of infections, and guidance on antibiotic choice to minimise the risk of antibiotic resistance.
Reactive elements include outbreak management, incident investigation, and the provision of advice for all Trust and PCT staff, patients and members of the public.
We have built up considerable expertise in the control of C.difficile infection and our advice is sought regularly by other Trusts and organisations both in the UK and further afield.
We have amongst the lowest rates of C.diff in the UK and also lower rates of MRSA bloodstream infection than the UK average.
Our team consists of consultant microbiologists, who are also infection control doctors, infection control nurses and secretarial staff. We also have close links with the microbiology labs.
