It is a service based at the hospital that provides a full specialist assessment of your medical condition and any associated problems you are experiencing and have discussed with your GP.
Your GP has discussed your medical problems with the specialist team here. They have agreed that you will benefit from an intensive and urgent review that will help them manage your condition.
In most cases you will be seen the next day following your visit to your GP. There may be occasions where your GP decides you need to come in the same day. If this is the case, your GP will arrange your visit.
You will be seen by the doctor who will discuss your condition and symptoms with you and undertake an examination. They may need to do some tests such as bloods, x-rays or ECG.
You may also be seen by a nurse or therapist who will assess how you are managing at home and will be able to offer you help and advice.
Tea and coffee will be available and if you stay over lunchtime we will supply a snack box.
Space is limited to accommodate relatives so please bring only one person with you.
There are full disabled facilities at the unit.

please wear comfortable loose fitting clothing and shoes
spectacles, hearing or walking aids that you use
a book to read/additional snacks
please do not bring any valuables.
Your GP will ask if you have somebody who is able to take you to the unit. It will be signposted Medical Day Unit and there are 20 minute drop off spaces available marked G and H.
There are also two large public pay and display car parks at the hospital. There is a lift to take you to the front door which will be clearly marked – please come in and go to reception.
If you do not have anybody who can take you then your GP will arrange transport for you. It will pick you up from your home and bring you to the unit for your appointment. It will take you home following your appointment.
The doctor will discuss your condition with you and any changes he is making to your treatment. The nurses may arrange for you to have some therapy at home if you need this.

It is important to let us know as soon as possible if you are unable to attend your appointment. Please phone 01494 426318 and ask to be put through to the Medical Day Unit. Please speak to a member of staff or leave a message on the answer phone.
